Today's world is a funny one!
No I don't mean Donald Trump's rise in politics or how AR is beginning to help clinics diagnose and treat patients half way across the globe (although that is pretty amazing!)
I'm talking about how our human biology isn't built for today's world and challenges!
Do you find yourself constantly asking when will you finally adapt to the working life? Do you often wonder why you're tired and frazzled at the end of each day?
Well, that's not going to away any-time soon I'm afraid. (Sorry!)
You see, our brain and body is literally (and I do mean literally and not metaphorically!) not built for the lifestyle we lead in today's world.
Our brains and bodies are built for physical and social survival. Think Caveman!
We use to be constantly scavenging for food and running from predators. Now food is only an app away and running for any reason is just an inconvenience!
Instead, most of our time is occupied by sitting at a desk or in a car to get to our desk.
So what has this got to do with business? Well if you don't take care of yourself then your performance at work will naturally drop or eventually you will suffer from burnout and will be of no use to anyone.
Think about it, a race car is useless if it has no fuel in the tank and a flat tyre. Unless your Superman your brain and body can break too, make sure it doesn't happen!
Your body wasn't built for the sedentary office lifestyle we live today. To get maximum performance follow these basic guidelines:
- Eat good quality food. Did a caveman live off Coca Cola and cake? No!
For the past two years, I have personally followed a Paleo diet (with an exception of diary products and a cheat day on a Saturday). The Paleo diet is essentially the caveman's diet.
Here's a really useful website that tells you everything you need to know about following the original human diet; http://thepaleodiet.com/what-to-eat-on-the-paleo-diet/
- Exercise Regularly. A caveman would easily walk 6 miles just t find food and safety!
In today's world it can be difficult to find time to get to the gym or a sports club but as long as you have the internet you can work out.
When I went travelling I didn't have access to a gym but was still working and needed an outlet to exercise and to stay healthy. I found an amazing website that has many different fitness programmes and it also doesn't take up too much of your time.
I completed the HIIT programmes in my lounge and it only took me between 7 - 20 mins a day. Here's the website; http://darebee.com
- Sleep! Get at least 8 hours of sleep to help consolidate the results of pattern matching and mental stimulation. A caveman survived and learned by matching patterns everyday.
I must admit that I am very lucky and do not struggle getting good quality sleep. However here are Mashable's top 10 apps to help you get better sleep; http://mashable.com/2014/07/23/sleep-better-apps/#u4wB9AlDWqqh
I appreciate that some of this advice is obvious but hopefully the additional links and information will be of some use and help you make some positive changes. One thing that I have done for years that helps me with these healthy habits is that I create a schedule for everything and colour code it. I try to stick to it efficiently as possible until it becomes a habit.
Just think to yourself - how did my ancient ancestors live and avoid the caveman syndrome!
